Short Story: Hero's Journey

Your final project will be a short story that uses the hero's journey template. You may work in a small group however if there are more than five people in your group you will need to have special permission.

Your story should have a beginning where you introduce the character and establish the conflict, a middle that advances the conflict and an end that resolves the conflict. You have a hero, somebody challenges the hero and the hero wins or loses.

Use the basic story template to write your script.

You will need to:

1. Write a treatment based on the Hero's Journey

2. A script and shot list based on your treatment

3. Film your story using your script and shot list as a guide

4. Edit your film. Your film should be between 5-10 minutes.

5. Have your film reviewed by the teacher before completion.

All films will be shown during the week of exams. Films must be previewed by teacher.

Your finished video will show the following film techniques:

• Establishing Shot
• Match Cuts
• Motion Match and Graphic Match
• Two Shot, Full Shot, Close-up (use 180 degree rule with greater than 30 degree shift)
• POV & Cut Away (Look at -the character looks at something, you show the shot of the something, then you cut back to the character)
• Short introductory animation using after effects.
• Voice Over Narration
• A Reveal Frame (Something passes in front of something that is revealed)
• Transitions used to show the passage of time and/or the beginning of a new scene.
• A montage showing a rapid succession of shots.
• A jump cut used for effect

You will be graded on your ability to use these basic film making techniques to tell a short story based on the hero's journey. Please read the standards page.
